Misery Loves Company by Paul Marino

This book is all about Dan Cantor who wants to join an anonymous serial killer club that is going viral on the internet. Dan is a sex addict, not a serial killer; he can't help overcome his addiction in sex; in addition, he started masturbating since he was 11 years old. Dan's purpose in attending the club is merely to see for himself the existence of the club. There Dan meets Jason, the club leader, a former serial killer known as the Coat Hanger Killer or Hanger Man. Besides Jason, the other members are the twins Nat and Richard, and Mark, the club's longest-standing member, as well as another member, Chief Killing Whores, a Native American Indian who doesn't talk much.

That same night, Dan accidentally kills the girl he kidnapped for sex and masturbation. The girl dies from an overdose of chloroform while Dan holds her mouth shut. The story of the murder goes viral on the news, causing Dan to become restless and panicky.

Dan's second visit to the club also brought him misfortune; Worse, the club was actually a scam, not an anonymous serial killer club, but rather a scheme to double the profits from the club members' investments/payments, more or less the same as a pyramid scheme (indirectly told by Marvin, Jason's old friend). Knowing this made all the club members angry, including Chief Killing Whores, who was initially quiet and didn't talk much before, but became very angry when he realized he had been cheated by Jason.

At the end of the story, Dan's fate was truly unfortunate because he was killed by a prostitute, under the orders of Chief Killing Whores. Dan's murder seemed unplanned, but it may have happened because of the Chief's anger that overflowed because he felt cheated by Jason and Marvin. Unfortunately for Dan, he encountered Chief on his way home, and the story ended with Dan's tragic murder.

For me, this book is rich in the characters of each club member. The storyline is simple, simply written, and suitable for reading by those aged 18 and above. This is a genre I wouldn’t normally pick up and read, but I enjoyed it.

Thank you Paul Marino; now am looking forward for a great new book from you.
