Yesterday by Samyann is an historical, romance novel, set in both present days and in several historical dates. Amanda Parker has had a tough life, with many unthinkable losses when she meets officer, Mark Patrick Callahan. She is reluctant when Mark insists on being in her life, but she can't shake the feeling of familiarity when she is with him. What is it about this man that has entered her life? Is there a reason he has come into her life at this moment? And what about the mysterious clock?
I thought Yesterday was a very enjoyable read. When I first read the summary, I thought it was going to be 'yet another' romance novel, but I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, this book has an obvious love story in it, but the author takes it a bit further, by also including an historical event. The story start of really strong, by immediately throwing the reader into a scene full of action. After that event, the story takes a moment to introduce the characters to the reader.
Then the book introduces the possibility of reincarnation, which at first I thought was a bit far-fetched and I do think this part is why this book is not for everyone. Readers who don't believe in reincarnation will probably don't appreciate this book from this moment, unless they have an open mind. I think reincarnation is definitely a possibility because I just can't accept that we stop existing after death, while we are so incredibly conscious of everything when we are alive. However, I don't believe we can ever remember anything from our past lives because I think we wouldn't be able to function if we retain all that knowledge.
What I really liked about the book and what made the book more than just another romance novel, was the different chapters where they moved to the past and the focus was on a different character, in a different time. I liked this so much because it made me feel like I was reading two different stories at the same time, which kept me interested. I also liked that the author wrote about 'The Chicago Fire' that happened in 1871 and the events leading up to it. I'm really interested in historic events, so this really added to the enjoyment of the book for me.
I think this book would be most suitable for people who like romance novels with a bit of a twist to the story. But I think this book would also be very enjoyable for most people, who have a relative open mind to alternative subjects.
I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because it was a breath of fresh air amongst all the romance novels on the market at the moment. I'm not a huge fan of romance novels myself because it's just the same story over and over again. That's why I would definitely recommend this book to others!
