Margalit was no stranger to the fact that academics were not her strong suit. Although this made her feel inadequate to a certain degree, she made up for it by playing the piano beautifully and passionately. Many people made sure to accentuate this particular strength of hers, even encouraging her to play professionally. This made her believe in herself, but things took a turn for the worst when she decided to return to Israel as a young adult. What was supposed to be a joyful return to her native land ended up sending her down almost a two-decade-long depression. Part of combating her depression was recalling the blocked memory of that fateful day when her hopes were shattered. In Keys to Harmony, which is an autobiography by Margalit Jakob, we witness a tampered dream, a tedious battle against suicide and depression, a traumatic family history, the reclamation of that dream, and the courage to embark on an unapologetic creative journey.

I loved reading this bittersweet memoir. I loved how real and relatable it was. A multitude of people suffer from mental health-related issues, and not much attention is given to these issues. I loved how Margalit challenged the stigma around therapy and antidepressants. As seen in her personal story, these played a huge role in the betterment of her health. I was mostly encouraged by how she became an expressive arts therapist. She took her two utmost struggles, depression and creative restraint, and used them as inspiration and made it her duty to help other people who experience the same struggles that she experienced prior. Lastly, I loved the Hebrew terms that were incorporated. This made the book have a rich essence of culture.

I have no reason to dislike this book. The transparency of the author and her experiences give voice to many people. The story was conveyed with an unbiased point of view, and the way she expressed herself was clear of obscenity.

I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is inspirational and insightful. It is not a guidebook, but the experiences can definitely help those who feel restricted mentally and creatively. Notwithstanding that I came across a few errors, the book was well edited.

I would recommend this book to anyone, as these are universal experiences. However, I specifically recommend it to those who take an interest and are learned in the field of piano playing, as a lot of piano-related things are mentioned. Lastly, I would recommend this book to anyone who may be in need of encouragement to rise out of depression.
