“The Road to Moresco by Mark Jamilkowski” traces a family’s journey through 150 years of world history, commencing in mid-1800s Sicily and Turin. The story primarily revolves around Marcello, who loses his parents through violent means and pledges himself to Italy’s future. Fascinated by Mussolini’s fascist government, he quits Sicily for Venice, where he adopts the new political ideology. His association with Opera Nazionale Balilla and later involvement in Venice reconstruction projects portrays his dedication towards a nationalistic cause. The narrative is interwoven between personal life events and historical realities, thereby illustrating how political turmoil influences the lives of individuals as well as family dynamics.

I love “The Road to Moresco” because it has a rich historical background and cultural exploration too. It is a novel that gives a detailed account of events like World War II and the fascist rise in Italy. By suggesting Maria-Luisa’s connection with Mussolini’s regime and Opera Nazionale Balilla, it brings out the complexities involved with political ideologies during such a time period, hence giving depth and realism to this story. In addition, the book traverses different cultural settings from Italy to America, thus making its narration more interesting due to the diverse cultural experiences described in it. Chiara's adaptation to an American lifestyle after relocating from Germany is one of its most fascinating aspects, and it reveals cultural adjustment/identification. Together, these elements create a vivid and immersive reading experience that brings both historical and cultural dimensions to life in a captivating way.

I will rate "The Road to Moresco" 5 out of 5 stars. The rich historical context and cultural exploration are standout features. The detailed portrayal of events like World War II and the exploration of diverse cultural settings, from Italy to America, are captivating. There's nothing I could dislike about this book. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy historical fiction and cultural narratives with deep, well-developed characters. This book was exceptionally edited.
