Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy drama novel, full of magic, drama, and politics. There are so many things unfolding; it is beautiful to imagine the world through the author’s eyes. There’s betrayal, and there’s power. There’s politics, and there’s humility. The story starts with a gory scene of a massacre to set the plot in motion. You are introduced to one of the most powerful personas in the story at the very start. The Voulhire is an imaginary kingdom. There is a poor refugee of war who is looking to find some shelter and finds himself in a boat bound for the city of Soulhire, the capital of the kingdom of Voulhire.
The characters are really amazing. So many of them have such complexity to them, it feels real. You will start to see real-world issues like caste and greed shown in the story from time to time. I really liked the character of the mage Meldorath, who is the central persona in the entire story. The story sort of revolves around him a lot. You will see so many shades in so many characters. It was a sight to see it unfold as the story progressed. Another character I really liked was that of the refugee Galen. He has so much to discover, and as he does, the story gets even more interesting.
This novel reminded me of some of the best period films I enjoyed in my youth. The story is a smoothie of films like The Scorpion King, The Mummy, The Lord of the Rings, and even Game of Thrones. I am not saying that the author copied them, but the world is just similar and even more intriguing than some of them. It is a beautiful novel, and I cannot believe that I never came across it before.
There are certain issues with the novel. Some of the parts will seem to drag. The world-building itself will take a lot of time, and the reader might get frustrated at points. Apart from that, there is nothing to complain about. It is a brilliant work by the author, and to think he has done more of these is commendable. His storytelling style is on point, even if the story needs a little pace in some areas.
For the professionally edited story, I am giving We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I do not have any other complaints, apart from the lack of pace in some areas. This is a highly recommended read for those who enjoy fantasy and other worldly drama-filled novels with well-written characters and great stories till the last page.
