Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. These are only a handful of the numerous gastrointestinal problems that can arise from disregarding gut health. Fortunately, the importance of the gut and how it affects other bodily systems and vice versa are highlighted in J.L. Service's book, Essential Gut Health for Women Over 50. This explains why the gut is sometimes referred to as the "second brain." We examine the components of the gut, how they affect hormone balances, how specific lifestyle decisions can strengthen or weaken our gut system, and how the gut has a direct impact on our mental well-being. This book additionally offers guidelines on how to get our guts back to optimal health and keep them healthy as we age.

I adore that this book not just offers
the reader helpful advice, but in addition offers practical steps to creating a healthy digestive system. The gut-brain axis and the way the vagus nerve facilitates communication between the gut and the brain particularly piqued my interest. This merely serves to highlight how intricately designed our bodies are and how interconnected everything is.

This book's primary flaw, in my opinion, was how much of the same material was repeated.

This book was edifying. Extensive research was done, and everything was factual. I love the fact that the author shared her personal experience of how poor gut health impacted her. However, I wish that there were more personal stories shared throughout the book. There were a few mistakes that I came across, so it could have been edited better. Therefore, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is especially essential to women over the age of fifty, as women within this age range are more prone to face health battles, as their bodies are adjusting through the postmenopausal stage. Though targeted at women over the age of fifty, the information that it contains is vitally important for everyone to know. Those interested in biological matters and nutritional studies would enjoy this book.
