As a beginner author, I spent months trying to rein in my ideas which were loose and out of control in many ways. Although I was very passionate and enthusiastic about my topic, that did not matte for without a reasonable framework, neither I nor the reader had a chair to sit in or a room to go to. Instead, I wasted months changing chapters, shortening, lengthening, deleting it. At the end, I narrowed my book into about five chapters which still contained some overlaps.
Without an outline or blueprint, my book was not as cohesive or convincing as it could have been. Having read the book, I now have a better understanding of how much to include, where and when. Instead of worrying about having too little or too much, I now know how many ideas I want to include and exactly where it needs to go.Using the techniques given in the book, a beginner or experienced writer can easily avoid scope creep, writers’ block, and time wasted in trying to piece everything together.
For all the brilliant writers out there, look at this as an exercise in self-discipline. You may have the most creative ideas out there. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, you still need an outline and that is exactly where this book comes in. You cannot depend on inspiration and creativity to carry you through. Mind maps and outlines suggested in the book will carry you through. An outline is not enough. You must know what type of books yours is and who it is intended for.
My favorite features about the book include a) Clear explanation of the five general types of non-fiction. B) Making pre-planning a required task instead of jumping straight into the chapters. C) Asking the hard questions authors typically do not think of. D) Forcing the author to think a lot before they write. E) An inclusion of practical exercises that are guaranteed to produce results. F) Use of visual diagrams to facilitate mind mapping. G) Emphasis on pre-planning and creativity instead of just mere content. G) Fractal approach: The idea that a well-written chapter can and could be the seed of another book.
In short, this book is the Cliffnotes you need to get you through your difficult task of producing that bestseller you have been meaning to publish. It gives you the guidance and confidence you need to nail your ideas into a framework that is workable. It takes away your worries and forces you to classify and categorize your ideas way beforehand so you do not panic at the end. It makes your ideas come alive. It asks the difficult questions in the beginning so you don’t make a fool of yourself at the end.
All in all, the icing on the cake is the peace of mind the book provides. It’s stressful enough to have to piece everything together and make them coherent. This book is your companion and secret weapon. If you know how to use it, you may very well be the next secret weapon to make your best-selling book a reality.
My rating for the book is 3 out of 4 stars.
