The book, Sent to Watch, is written by David Lebenstein. The book is set in a science fiction world set across multiple planets about emissaries from a confederation of alien planets who are sent out to collect intelligence on other civilizations’ technology and information on their cultural advancements. The story is set following the battle of Waterloo in 1815. Two agents who are fresh from the battle are called upon to serve. These two agents are given different aliases and sent to obtain information on the progress of the different nations that populate other planets. The two agents work alongside each other for an extended period of time, and eventually fall in love with each other and have a child together. This turns out to be contrary to the policy of the confederation and causes some issues between the agents and the confederation.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how it included lots of information about historical events that have actually happened in the past and blended them with science fiction. I love it when books contain the historical context of politics and people in power. I think it makes the book much more interesting and relatable. I also really enjoyed how the author included aspects of science fiction that are theoretically possible, even though they are not yet practical. For example, the author included scenes where characters could predict the outcome of future events through probabilistic simulations.

There was honestly nothing that I did not like about the book. I thought the story was interesting, and it held my attention for the duration of the book. I thought that the book’s story was very original, and I have not read a book with these kinds of plotlines before.

I would rate this book five out of five stars for the reasons I have stated above. Additionally, I did not find any grammatical errors or typos. This is a testament to the exceptional editing that was completed to the book.

I would recommend this book to young adults and adult readers who are interested in science fiction and historical narratives. I thought the book was a very good combination of both genres.
