Stevie Tenderheart Books - Billy Jack (The Great Escape) by Steve William Laible is a children's book featuring a little boy who did not want to go to bed early. To Billy Jack, our hero in this tale, it made no sense to go to bed while the sun was still up. So the clever youngster devised a plan to fix that! Readers will be entertained by what Billy Jack did after his mommy and daddy tucked him into bed one bright summer's evening.

What I liked most were the themes of adventure, imagination, and play depicted throughout this lively story. I think these concepts are very important to children's development, and I believe it was because of them that Billy Jack was able to see the possibilities and potential gains of his pursuit.

Another positive aspect of the book was the insertion of the definitions of certain words used in the storytelling. I thought this was a good educational tool, as it would help young readers/listeners understand what was being said as well as broaden their vocabulary.

If pressed to state one thing I didn't like or appreciate about the book, I would have to say it was the lack of accountability for Billy Jack's actions. It is my opinion that adding this element would have made the story more well-rounded.

All in all, I thought the novella was really good but not amazing. I therefore rate it 4 out of 5 stars. It appeared to have been professionally edited, which is always a plus. Not written in the usual way of children's books, Billy Jack (The Great Escape) was a bit fast-paced. For this reason, I don't know that I would use it as a bedtime story - not if the idea is to lull little ones to sleep. As a funny daytime read, however, I would definitely recommend it!
