Soul Seeker was an absolute 4 out of 5 for me. It was a story that captivated me. There was a little sneak peek in the beginning that well laid out the plot and demonstrated Kaylin’s writing style extremely well. The details were cohesive and connected. The formatting was perfectly consistent throughout. And that sneak peek made me really look forward to some key points and what led to those moments. Felt like watching a movie after reading the book it’s based on and seeing how the director was going to play it out. There were parts when the story shifted, and it made me feel conflicted – but for the most part, while still connecting the stories through characters, I was still absolutely enthralled in this world. It felt like more of the world and how it worked was being rolled out in front of me like a red carpet. Not going to lie, I am a sucker for learning more about a book’s world and it was almost better that I didn’t have to wait for a sequel for this. This book was particularly full of profanity, had some sexual references (some with more verbs and descriptions of the acts than others and some sexual assault), and very few grammar mistakes. If the first two bother you or are not mature enough for this type of content, I would defer.
My main comments that could make this better and to a 5 out of 5 have largely to do with roughly the last 100 pages. The story started to unravel in a bad way. The details were not as there as before or were just not connected properly and we moved on without explaining it. It was also largely focused on a storyline different from where we were. It stayed connected to the first part of the book through characters and events that had previously happened but were in a completely different tone. I was kept in the world, but it was harder to get through due to the story feeling rushed to finish. I honestly would have been fine if the book was longer if it meant the storyline felt more fleshed out. I also feel that the shifts in storyline might have felt slightly more cohesive if something was done format-wise to help. Such as separating it into parts.
