Like A Lily Among The Thorns by Karen S. Bell centers around Gabby, who works at her local library, where she befriends an older, mysterious woman known as the Countess. When Gabby learns that she has inherited a Bed and Breakfast from her father, she makes the decision to leave her old life behind. First, she and the Countess, having developed a familial bond, travel to Europe, where Gabby, now known as Gabrielle, meets two men who will be important to her life and mission. Back at home with a small cache of friends and lovers, they update the Bed and Breakfast and meet the Spirit Goddesses who guard and protect this sacred place. They soon learn their part in protecting their part of the world from apocalyptic changes that will soon occur due to current climate chaos.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons. It is unlike anything I have read before. It manages to combine spiritualism, climate change, romance, family secrets, mysticism, belief in the Female Divine, Goddesses, suspense, and people working together for the common good. If the combination of all these elements sounds messy, disjointed, or hard to follow, trust me, it is not. This story is precisely written and planned so that the reader is drawn into this world, our world of the current climate crisis, by using the voices of the varied characters. I love that a female was chosen to be a savior and that there are Goddesses involved. There is so much female empowerment throughout this story.

There is nothing to dislike. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the way the story was told.

With an overwhelming positive response, I am going to give this story 4 out of 5 stars. There were more than 10 errors, mostly having to do with missing letters from certain words. I fear that it was a printing error, but it detracts from the story being nearly perfect.

This book would appeal to so many people. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys mystical realism, romance, a bit of mystery, and a non-preaching lesson about the devastation of climate change. This book was entertaining and engaging on so many levels.
