Review of Just Die
Could you imagine having a stroke, waking up, and getting annoyed by your new roommate? Ordinarily, you would give them the finger as subtly as possible, but for Jake Silver, that’s a big no. He learned from his mother that instead of flipping people off, he could point at them and say “Just die” to get his negative feelings out of the way. What he couldn’t imagine was that this same gesture could actually kill someone, which so happened to be his sick companion. Confused by what happened, he is discharged from the hospital and goes home with the help of his fiancée, Beth-Ann. And that’s the start of E. Alan Fleischauer’s novel “Just Die”, a thriller that keeps you turning the page, wanting to discover what’s next.
The story flows with Jake testing out his powers in the company of Beth-Ann and Omar, a retired football player who becomes his friend and chauffeur. As the story progresses, we meet more characters, each unique in their way, that want to use Jake’s power for good or blame him for something. Even though the story is rooted in the real world, you can see the sci-fi aspects of Jake's adventures.
Fleischauer has a way with his pen that makes him seem knowledgeable and approachable. I have no qualms about the first part of the book; the mystery is there, and you can see the stakes for the characters, who are mostly sympathetic and well-rounded. There’s occasional humor throughout the book, which was cleverly written.
On the other hand, as a young non-American, most of the descriptions of alcohol and sports were unnecessary to me and didn’t make the story better or worse. I also felt the book’s second part was less entertaining than the first. Not only that, but I think it may have been handled better if the length was longer, as it could go into more detail about some plot parts.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars, as I consider the premise of the book exciting and well executed, and my criticisms were previously addressed. The book had no grammar mistakes and seemed to have been professionally edited. I would recommend this book to fans of thrillers, action, and stories with an underlying paranormal feel. Furthermore, I must say that the book contains profanities, in case the potential reader has a problem with it. Most people could enjoy this book without a problem, as long as they are of legal age.
