The Wicked Wives: A novel based on a true story was written by Gus Pelagatti, a trial lawyer in Philadelphia. This historical fiction brings back to life the Philadelphia poison scandals of 1938, where Giorgio DiSipio and his harem of married wives plot the murder of their husbands, attempting to make it rich off their fraudulent insurance policies. But Giorgio may not be the only major player involved, and his motives may be shadowing the true depths of the crimes. Assistant D.A. Tom Rossi works diligently with his team to unravel all the details and individuals associated with Giorgio and the seventeen wives. The entire time Tom is building his case against those involved in the conspiracy, his dignity is challenged, and his future is threatened. Regardless he continues to pursue the involved criminals and fights for his position in court despite the implications to his career and the cost to his personal life.

My favorite part of The Wicked Wives were the interrogations and court hearings. Often, they amounted to absolute chaos. It was comical despite the nature of the book. The picture Pelagatti paints of the wives is remarkable. It was easy to visualize them all. I enjoyed the pace of the book as well. I never felt that his narration of the events was dragging along. He told the story as if it had spanned only months when, in reality, years had gone by from the first death to the final conviction. Additionally, I appreciated the epilogue. I always like to know what happened next and how reality played out.

I honestly cannot pick one thing I disliked about the story. I was drawn in by the wives and curious about their individual and collective tales. Some parts made my skin crawl, such as some of the depictions of the wives' various affairs. Or the visual descriptions of some of the criminals. Other times, I found myself frustrated by the actions of the characters. But they only made the story more enticing and the plot more engaging.

I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed just about every aspect of Pelagatti's portrayal of the lusty, greedy wives, but there were some errors throughout the text. Due to that reason, I cannot give it a higher rating.

I have always been a fan of true crime; I was not surprised I enjoyed the book so much. The author's knowledge and experience with the law and the location of the crimes made the story that much more exciting. I would highly recommend The Wicked Wives to other readers that enjoy true crime or historical fiction.
