The following is a review of Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign. Opaque is the first book in the Scion Saga, a supernatural tale. The young adult story has two main characters, Adam and Carly. They fall in love and go on an adventure of self-discovery as well as a fight for their lives and their loved ones’ lives.

In Piure, California, Adam was always an outcast among his peers, who was filled with bitterness about the people around him, often calling them animals. Except for his mother, who he adored. Part of the reason Adam felt superior was that he had a telekinetic ability. One day, his life changed when Carly moved to town, and they formed an instant romantic bond. Carly opened his eyes to a long-kept secret that he belonged to one of seven Russian families, who harbor similar gifts. Unfortunately, these gifts come with the price of their kind being stalked, captured, and tortured by scientists, known as the Iksha. Adam, Carly, and their friends are known as the Descendants. They must decide to run and hide forever or fight back.

I enjoyed Leigh-Reign’s story. The writer balanced out a world that we are familiar with, with a world where characters have supernatural abilities. The in-depth description of the characters, especially their emotions, brings the readers right into the story to feel as if they really existed. Adam especially had a major character growth from the start of the book. Carly also had her own arc that was no less than her partner’s that changed her life. I also loved learning about the variety of powers that several of the characters had.

While I enjoyed most of the story, there were unfortunately some not-so-great parts. Although it’s later explained, the feelings Adam had in the beginning for his mother were rather off-putting. In fact, Adam’s whole attitude at the beginning of the book made me dislike him at first. Thankfully, he redeemed himself and became one of my favorites.

I give this story 5 out of 5 stars. The rating was earned by the way the writer drew me into her story by building excitement and creativity in her plot. There were a couple of minor errors, however, they didn’t detract from the story.

I recommend this story for readers that enjoy the genre of supernatural or even paranormal romance. The audience is not intended for children, but for young adult readers. The story does contain profanity, violence, and other adult situations.
