Review of The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid
A book that deals with friendship and redemption No matter how frustrated you are at life, you need to keep believing. The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid is a tale about two different characters, Duke Reynolds and Gary Robinson, who was nearly met by self-destruction. The author created an amazing book in which he portrayed himself as a character.
This book has three different sections. The first one was about Duke Reynolds, a young kid who left his hometown to join the circus. As time went on, the circus became his family, and he went on to perform for almost five decades as a sword swallower. After a terrible accident, he stops swallowing swords but keeps being a stage performer for the circus. The second part of the book talks about Gary's life. A student from the Central Valley, he is a drunkard and loves to party. He later drops out of school and finally meets Duke Reynolds at a party during one of the stage performances. The third part of this book is the most crucial one; it talks about the unconventional meeting and tutoring between Gary and Duke. Duke subsequently becomes a mentor for Gary, whose life might be on the verge of self-destruction. Will Duke save Gary from possible self-destruction?
I would be remiss if I didn't mention my dislike for the repeated drinking in this novel; it was just too much, and the ingestion of methamphetamine just angered me more. If there was a reason for me to have dropped this book while reading it, it would have been because of the drinks. Another minor negative aspect for me was the cover of this book. It was a bit disturbing; the author could have portrayed sword swallowing without actually showing someone swallowing a sword.
Eighty percent of my thoughts about this book were good. What I liked first about this book was the character Duke Reynolds. How he left his comfort zone just to fulfill his dreams was admirable, and his ability to relate to broken souls was also a factor I liked. Another positive aspect was the narration of this book; the author started with a top-notch rhythm and maintained it all through the book.
I will rate The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid 4 out of 5 stars; this book will do more good than bad for young people. I was also pleased with the editorial aspect of this book, as I found no errors in it. This book was exceptionally well edited.
I will recommend The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid by Gary Robinson to anyone who loves a fascinating and emotionally charged story. I also recommend it to many of my friends who are seeking redemption in life.
