Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. It is the first novel in the “We are Voulhire" series. It discusses the exodus of a boy, Galen Bray, from his homeland because of the war that has become the order of the day in the land.
Galen Bray was born and brought up in the land of princes. At the age of seven, the land fell into chaos and war. What was the cause of this war? An Emperor called the Emperor of the Lullabies had four sons, whom he feared were after his throne. So, he gave them their territories to rule in the hope that it would make them forget their plans to overthrow him.
I really loved how the storyline connected in this book. At the early stage of the book, each chapter was talking about a separate incident, and the author made no mistake in linking all events properly in a way to prevent confusion. Apart from that, I loved how each character had a specific purpose and was well-defined. Judge Eldus Alderman, a good friend of the Voulhire king, King Wilhelm, was given a special task by the king. This task was to be the Lord of Hillport, a town in the southern part of Voulhire. He was given such a task because there had been some disturbances in that town and its people were not settled; he was charged with bringing normalcy back to the town. Of course, this was no easy task, as the people of Hillport didn't make the work any easier for him. Galen, on the other hand, moved to Voulhire for two reasons. Firstly, it was to escape the land of princes due to the war that'd been happening there for twenty years. Secondly, he was to inherit possessions left to him by his late uncle. He didn't have so many memories of his uncle, as he was very little back then.
What I disliked about this book were the scenes that were exaggerated. The characters were made to enter god mode in those scenes. One of the scenes was the one where Rowan fought against some guards of the land of princes during the rescue of Galen; besides that, the book was wonderful.
I am rating the book four out of five stars because of my dislike of the book as stated above. I did not find any grammatical or spelling errors, which means the book was exceptionally well-edited. Furthermore, I recommend this book to readers who love stories that involve magical powers.
