A thrilling start to a young aspiring magician’s journey. Delvin endures the most extraordinary circumstances, trials, and obstacles, but not without courage and determination. Having acquired the necessary knowledge and skill from his mentor Borlock, Delvin decides to leave the village of Byford in pursuit of a new start with his friend Greg after unfortunate circumstances unfold.

While familiarising himself as a traveling magician, Delvin finds himself wrapped up in a web of constant twists and turns. Never knowing what to expect next. He meets a presumptuous princess by the name of Jarla and the more timid Princess Fionella, who lead him straight into treacherous territory. With the intent of ending an ongoing war between Hengel and Argent, a disturbing truth is discovered. While fulfilling what princess Jarla set out to do, Delvin comes to understand just how much influence the magic world has…

The Magician’s Secret by Charles Townsend is an unceasing enthralling fictional story, which guides the reader into a world of magic and suspense. The plot is clear and concise which makes this book a pleasant read. There is a constant sequence of events that unfolds as the story progresses. Full of anticipation, one can say what else could go wrong for Delvin?

I was taken aback by the first chapter, I can definitely say this book has a unique beginning. It immerses the reader into the story without hesitation, developing quickly so there are no tedious scenes in the book. I can say that I enjoyed the creativity within the book, the author included maps which provided a means to help guide the reader’s imagination in the story. The characters are all unique, which the reader acknowledges through the actions of the characters.

It is a pity that there was not a lot of detail pertaining to the characters. I personally prefer characters’ appearances to be more descriptive. The characters’ appearances were quite vague and in turn, left me wondering what the author had visualized when creating these characters. I do like a story to come to life and although the storyline is detailed, eventful, and intriguing I felt that the characters fell short. There was no personal dialog between characters, leaving everything that was said between characters to the point, and as a matter of fact, this in turn made it difficult to relate to a certain character. There also wasn’t any depth in the characters’ relationships. Delvin is the only one in the story who had the most depth, unfortunately, there was no actual backstory to him.

I would rate this book 3 out of 5 stars because it was a pleasant and compelling read, although, I found a few typing and punctuation errors. The unfolding of events and the story itself I found captivating and enjoyable. However, that being said it seems that was the main focus of the book, and not the characters, which I found to be rather disappointing. There are scenes of violence and suggestive behaviour so I would recommend this book to young adults who enjoy fantasy, and action packed adventures.
