We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a wonderful fictional book that depicts with enviable accuracy, the magic that reigns supreme in the capital city Soulhire, the political plays that shape the lives of the characters and most of all the joys and struggles of people similarly face regardless of social or financial differences. The book shows the dynamics of society; from those who reside in the upper echelons of society, to those whose existences are determined by their choices. It shows greed, jealousy, and hope as they interact in the souls of men. It describes society unerringly; we are all products of our desires, hence, power will inevitably fall into the hands of the one with the strongest desire. The paths taken from there can only serve to improve or deteriorate the society further.

The book opens up with a prologue introducing Meldorath in all his power as he goes to dispatch justice on Lord Orlin, the Lord of Hillport. It also depicts his reign and its conclusion. It then carries on to show Galen’s escape from the land of the Princes. A war-torn string of islands controlled by four brothers whose greed had led them to engage in a civil war for decades. Galen’s escape (made possible by his Grand-Uncle) will set him on a voyage of self-discovery and search of greater purpose in the more prosperous land of Voulhire. It then follows up with the celebration of the Feast of Human Hands. Here we are introduced to the majestic person of King Wilhelm Arcolo; a king whose reign had brought peace to the kingdom for twenty-five years. We will then bear witness to whether or not he can maintain the stability of his kingdom, or if greed and jealousy weave their way into his inner court and ruin all that he has built. The story then continues with Eldus; the new lord of Hillport, and his big dreams of development of the town. It showcases the relationship dynamics in the family between husband and wife, and brother and sister. It shows his struggles in maintaining the people of Hillport and the secret of King Wilhelm. His manner of bearing the responsibility is shown in great detail. It also shows the delicacy with which he managed work and family.

I found Matthew Tysz descriptive abilities extremely enjoyable. Every scene and every character was made impressively vivid by the author’s flair for the descriptive.

However, the interactions between the characters were not properly structured. I often found myself mistaking another character’s statement for the continuation of the earlier character’s statement. I also disliked the multiple points of view. They sometimes deviated from the story and ended up diluting my rather concentrated interest in the book.

I’ll give this book a rating of 3 out of 5. I love the descriptive flair of the author, however, even that can be overdone. Also the multiple points of view created too many plot holes that weren’t properly addressed. There was almost palpable intensity in the interactions of the characters, however, the conversation dynamics were not always well structured.
