Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service: Subject to change without notice, written by Craig W. Stanfill, is a science fiction novel based on a world being monitored and controlled by artificial intelligence. Everything, starting from clothes, houses, food, entertainment, employment, sexual relationships, and transportation, is managed, organized, and controlled by an artificial intelligence company that has formulated conditions for doing business called terms of service that one must adhere to obtain goods and services. Failure to adhere to them leads to punishment. Kim, the main character in the novel, having studied artificial intelligence in school, works as an AI trainer in an artificial intelligence company. When we met Kim working for the company, she was innocent, obedient, and focused on her work. Still, as she progressed in her career, she discovered the world around her, learned the secrets of artificial intelligence and its driving force, and, more importantly, learned the origin of her trauma. There are a lot of turns of events in the story.
The positive aspects I found in Terms of Service. Craig W. Stanfill has exposed both the good and bad sides of artificial intelligence in the story, as he didn't dwell on one side.
The good side of AIs is that everything will run smoothly in society since they are automated and taken care of for you. The bad side of AIs is that they are like dictators, denying people their rights and freedom. The author also did well with character development and their roles. Kim was obedient and compliant. The AIs played their role well. The plot and structure were fascinating since the book had three parts and nineteen chapters. The first part focused on a good set-up, characterizing the main character and world-building. The second part was where there was a turn of events that made the story intriguing. I also appreciate Craig W. Stanfill giving a note at the beginning on pronouns used in the story to make readers familiar with them and understand why they are used whenever they come across them. The writing style was quite impressive.
The negative aspect I found in the book was that, in the beginning, the story starts at a slow pace, thus making it boring and even deterring one from reading it.
I rate the Terms of Service 5 out of 5 stars because of the many positive aspects I found. I didn't come across any grammatical or typographical errors in the book. It is a well-written and exceptionally edited novel.
I recommend this book to people who love novels packed with digital technologies and enthusiasts interested in learning artificial intelligence. The book illuminates where we are heading or how the future will look with the advancement of technology.
