The Storyteller's Return is a story written in the form of poems. The author, Opal Palmer Adisa, dedicates this collection of story poems to people who departed from home a long time ago but have now returned, those who want to return home, those who are unable to return, and those whose return is spiritual.

The book tells the story of the storyteller, her departure from home, her longing for home, and her return. She provides various definitions of a home, both in a positive and a negative sense. She further explains how a schematic illustration using parallel lines and an upright building represents a house, not a home. She speaks of a home as a place where there is a collision of love and logic. It is the memories that we make in a house that make it a home, not the building materials used for the construction.

There are some important features to be considered when writing a poem. One of these features, which I'll like to applaud the author for, is her professional way of implementing literary devices. I commend the author for her artistic skills, coupled with her unique style of writing. She also makes use of native Jamaican English. Not only this, she introduces the reader to some Jamaican folk songs and ceremonies.

Though this book focuses on the home, there are many things directed toward females. Issues of kidnapping, abuse of female children, and sexual harassment are also being discussed. The author, based on her observation and experience, offers some advice to females. She implores little girls to keep away from the street since it is not safe for girls. She also emphasizes how adults do whisper their disapproval but have never interfered with the unspoken things that happen to a female child in the home. She mentions the fact that some homes are home to violent fathers and even hide their incestuous acts.

I found no fault in this book. The book was well written and the manner in which the author beautifully used words poetically to express herself made it interesting. She exhibited professionalism in her writing style. All the words are in lowercase. Also, the chapters were devoid of punctuation marks except for the necessary ones that are needed in-between words.

I could not find any errors, both grammatical and typographical, in this book; this implies that the book was professionally edited. I think it deserves a full rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to readers interested in stories written as poetry. The book can also provide comfort for people far from home.
