Review of Lilly Of The Mountains
Lilly of the Mountains by D. L. Yoder is a gripping read. Lilly is introduced to heavy burdens at a young age and has to decide whether giving in to the pressures of life is the right decision or if there is a better way to have a life where she can exist without feeling overwhelmed and underappreciated. Several areas of Lilly's life are illuminated that were once kept from her. The reader becomes invested in learning more and more about Lilly’s difficult experiences to see what path she will choose in the end.
This book expresses the ups and downs of life and gives encouragement to others that survival and overcoming dark times is possible when you trust and believe in the power of love. This love cycle included loving family, loving others, and loving God. There is suspense around every corner and the story prompts you to want to read more and more to figure out the direction of the story. The story incorporates prominent themes of the 1940’s and transports you to that time with some people still using horses and wagons and others transitioning to cars and the threat of war. It makes you feel like you are going through the motions with Lilly and feeling her pain and anguish in the dark times. The story includes things that are necessary to grow relationships with others even when they are not showing you love. The description of the different buildings and the intense sensory reactions pull the reader in and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The book also incorporates some etiquette training for those who want to show more love and compassion to others. Showing family connections and the destruction that can follow when connections are broken are an added bonus to the storyline. There is also the incorporation of how to build a relationship with God and demonstration of how to overcome struggles.
There are some areas of the story that seem to wander off and then pick up with something else and interrupt the flow of the story’s progression. These scenes are memories from other story participants but seem out of place. These areas throw you for a loop, but since they are few and far between and the basic storyline is interesting, it is not a major issue. There is also the ending, that could have been left off or added as an extended ending, especially because it leaves the reader to wonder about what happens next. It feels unfinished.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The conclusion of the book went beyond what was needed and the ending dropped off. There were also a few grammatical and spelling errors in the book. Overall, it was a great read.
Readers who are interested in romance, suspense, and novels based in older times would enjoy this book. Also, readers who lean heavily toward Christian based books would enjoy this book. This book caters to an adult audience and is appropriate for lovers of romance without explicit and graphic scenes.
