Review of Guadians of Machu Picchu
The story in Guardians of Machu Picchu: Elixir of Life is set in 16th Century Peru at the centre of the Incan civilization. In an unforeseen attack on his village, Ocideron loses everything as all the elders are killed and everyone else enslaved. He sets out to find the city of the gods and its army in order to rescue his people. He is saved from a near-death experience by the warriors of Machu Picchu and finds so much more than expected when Inti, the sun god, reveals his purpose of being an eternal guardian. He discovers a kinship with Apo-Myta, another eternal guardian and captain of the Machu Picchu army. An elixir is given to Ocideron, granting him eternal life and making him an official guardian. Together with the army, Ocideron rescues most of his people from captivity but loses his betrothed to the white warriors’ captain whom she fell in love with. He and his brothers, ConiRaya and Ayar-Manco, including Apo-Myta, rebuild Machu Picchu and the entire civilization with their life mates after Inti expels all the wrongdoings by wiping out the entire nation in a divine plan. This story is one of adventure, sacrifice, and faith.
The author did a commendable job trying to balance the opinions of the era. The story did not discard the various ideas, practices, and problems of the people that lived in the civilization at that time, which made the book have a more realistic storyline. The story was short and candid. I love that the author did not go out of his way to create unnecessary events but made the story concise and fascinating. Also, the book has many intriguing aspects, making it more engaging and less monotonous. The character development of the story also made it more compelling to read. While making it an amusing read, the author did not fail to include positive and vital lessons. Some characters exhibited attributes that made them overcome many perplexities, and one could learn from them. This made the book have a didactic aspect to it which I loved. I admired how the author made the book empathetic and supportive to the reader who has undergone various losses. It teaches how they can deal with and overcome those losses while believing everything works out for good.
Guardians of Machu Picchu: Elixir of Life was poorly edited. It had a great deal of grammatical and spelling errors; hence it was arduous to read its several chapters, which were crammed with mistakes. In addition, the chapters weren’t properly outlined.
I loved reading this book; however, I rate it two out of four stars. The errors and the chapters that weren't properly outlined contributed to why I didn't give it more stars. Also, the execution of the storyline was quite underwhelming.
I recommend Guardians of Machu Picchu: Elixir of Life by Trycia Lino Borup to lovers of history. It is set in an ancient part of South America known for historical events. I also recommend it to lovers of adventurous stories.
