Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
This book, “Surviving the “Business” of Healthcare” by Barbara Galutia, unfolds the true life experience of a Physician Assistant called Barbara Galutia and her entire family of three generations. This amazing family, who dedicated their entire life serving their community, lives in a town along Route 309 between Allentown and Quakertown in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. In this nonfiction book, Barbara shared her 20 years of knowledge and medical experience thus empowering us with important solutions of ensuring that healthcare is available when needed the most. This book gives a vivid picture of how medicine in the late 60’s and early 80’s looked like. This is a huge contrast when Barbara further drew our attention to present day medicine. She pointed out that healthcare in the past was based on physical exam, history, experience and lastly the most suitable treatment option. On the other hand, modern day healthcare systems focused more on tests, labs, x-rays, sophisticated tools, health coaches and many other sophisticated equipments and services. The author further express her concerns on how the future of medicine will look like if such new methods and technologies replace one-on-one patient-provider experience. Barbara is not against modern technologies and upcoming services that are currently available. She however believes that medicine as a profession is going down and profit making has immensely affected patient-provider relationship.
I very much enjoy the simplicity of the grammar and the picture illustrations in this book. They make the storyline very easy to understand. It is equally a very straight forward real life story coming from a unique perspective: a Physician Assistant who emanates from father, grandfather and great grandfather who were all family practice physicians. I find advice on health coming from such source very credible. Experience, they say, is the best teacher.
The area in this book that I dislike is the experience of Barbara’s Dad. It is not fair that someone who dedicated his entire life serving his community by providing care to so many patients was not given proper care as a Senior Citizen in times of dire need. Barbara’s Dad was never sent to rehab though he needed it. However, with the wealth of information she had, Barbara was able to intervene to ensure that her Dad was properly treated. Barbara used this opportunity to empower the reader on important guidelines that can be used to protect the elderly.
I am glad to give this book 4 out of 4 stars because it provides great tips on how to escape the huge and sometimes unnecessary cost that comes with maintaining good health. The various medical practitioners that are available and the role they perform to ensure our well being; the necessity of insurance and how to choose the most effective insurance option; and how to shop for more affordable drugs were some of the important highlights in the book that I find very useful. These are important tips that can be applicable to many people in most parts of the world.
The editing of this book was professional because I did not find any error. I recommend this book to novice on health issues. This book will provide you with wealth of information that will be useful for timely medical intervention. Maintaining good health and timely medical intervention is everyone’s wish. No matter our different backgrounds, we all love to be in good health in order to achieve our dreams and aspirations in life. This book provides useful guidelines that will help us achieve that goal.
