BEYOND THE HIGHER GROUND by Thomas A. Brigger, is a complete fictional suspense, thoroughly entrenched in the American society of the latter 20th century. The author’s building and travelling background are manifest in his main character, Mason. Through Mason, Brigger highlights the personal struggle of an individual brought up in a single parent household, along with the trials and tribulations of an opiate addicted mother. Mason is unable to let go of his past, so when he is offered the job of “Project Manager” at the ‘Bright’s Mountain’ site in the Appalachians, he quickly immerses himself in the task. It is a small community and Mason is entrusted the task to build a big prison at the top of a mountain. His employers, ‘Doenitz Building Company,’ specialize in the construction of large prison complexes throughout the country.

Commencing from his very first day, Mason is pushed into a quagmire of drug addicts, leading business leaders of the area such as Cletus Wellman, his amiable wife, Sally, the local law enforcement agencies, the non-too-friendly neighbors (Cecil and Jeff). Despite the somewhat suspect accident on his very first day, a string of threatening messages during his year and a half at the sight, Mason stubbornly battles for his rights at great personal peril. Under extremely unsafe conditions, including the suspected presence of a large cache of drugs at the construction site, Mason is able to successfully complete his assignment, and in the process, befriend his difficult neighborhood, tackle the local mafia of the region (“Correll family”), extend help to his neighbors, and still stay alive. Certainly a book that will keep you glued, to the very last word.

A very well written book that kept one on edge from the very start. Hardly any editing errors detected, which made for a smooth reading. Though the issues relate to American society, they are representative of social drug related issues worldwide. All in all, a book that large segments of society can relate to, and enjoy.

While reading the book, one feels that Mason will get into a romantic relationship with Sally, or later on, with Melanie, his neighbor. Of course, it was not to be. Mason is recuperating the loss of his loving wife, Katherine throughout the story, and is unable to forget her. Maybe, a little romance would have done little harm.

A definite 4 out of 4 is my rating for this book. A touching story that a lot of us can relate to, all over the world. Rarely does one come across an error free text, and this needs to be commended. The book is recommended for all single parent families, as well as the families having a member hooked on drugs, or in rehabilitation.
