Review of Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks
Does taking vitamin C actually help treat a cold? Should you stretch your muscles before starting a workout? Are organic foods healthier? Does wifi have any harmful effects on the body? These, along with many other questions, will be answered by specialist physician Morton E Tavel in this comprehensive book on the facts and myths about human health.
In this day and age, we are constantly exposed to various information about health and nutrition. Due to the increase in information pollution, we are faced with contradictory facts and conflicting advice. We don't know who to trust or what to believe. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks shines a light on many questions and common doubts. This book touches on every subject you can think of that relates to the health of the human body. You will come out of it with a deeper understanding of how your body functions, what sort of a diet is best suited for you, which products you should and shouldn't be investing in, and how some common diseases can easily be prevented by making simple changes in your diet and daily routine.
One of the things I liked about this book was that it isn't restricted to nutrition. It also includes information on exercise, sleep, allergies, sunscreen, and treating a cold. It also discusses other topics, such as different ways to identify scams and whether air travel is safe. I really liked that the book is written in such a way that people with no knowledge of physiology or biochemistry can easily understand the concepts. The author gives scientific explanations without making things too complicated. However, people with a certain amount of medical knowledge can also learn new things and broaden their understanding. Being a dentistry student, I found it highly satisfying to read about the things I've learned in my courses. Overall, this book helped me see the bigger picture regarding the human body. Another thing I enjoyed was that besides giving theoretical knowledge, this book also gives you practical advice and talks about what actions you can take immediately. I really appreciated the 'conclusions' part at the end of some chapters. As each topic is supported with scientific data and related research, it was very helpful to read a summary of all the findings and to reach a conclusion.
The fact that the biological explanations aren't too detailed might be a downside for some readers. If you are in the medical field or already have a good amount of knowledge, this book might not contain a lot of new information for you. Another potential downside is that this book is mainly written for Americans and people living in the US. All brand recommendations and foods to avoid were specific to the US, along with population statistics, studies, and media reports. I wish it were more international.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars . I could only find a few errors, and it seems to be professionally edited. I think this is a must-read for anyone passionate about living a healthy lifestyle and curious about the different factors affecting our physical and mental health.
