Review of Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles: 2000-2016
Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles 2000 – 2016 is a collection of thirty-three short stories, a novella, and 2 graphic novels. The illustrations were written by one of the six artists. Most of his stories revolve around issues in families that in the narration were left with open endings, which means the readers could decide in any way they could. The characters from his stories are from all the statuses of the society, which again proves the point that human emotions are the same irrespective of their social status.
The Thirteen Nudes of Ernest Goings was the story I liked the most. It is about a family of three members. The father is a famous artist, his daughter is a business major who has no knowledge of art or artists but has a great business mind. The father has recently drawn nude pictures of a young girl, and the model's mother insists that the father promised her that the pay for her daughter's "service" must be a share from the exhibit. Both the wife and daughter of the artist suspect that they might have had something more than an artist and a model. When the daughter asks about this, the father doesn't say anything to confirm. When the model is questioned, she doesn't want to answer. The story further goes on with how the mother and daughter reacted to the art and whether the model got her pay as promised.
I liked how his stories didn't always have a "happy ending" but an ending that I had least expected. Although they hit us hard, they portrayed the reality of life. The stories are navigated based on human emotions and not based on anything that justifies which is right or wrong. The readers can have a different perspective on life after reading this book. I'd suggest people to read any one of the stories whenever they felt low to cheer their mood. There is no aspect I found in this book, which might mark as negative.
I would give this compilation a 3 out of 4 stars. The book is edited well with no noticeable mistakes. The illustrations before each of the stories explained the plot of the story. The graphic novels were two of the stories given previously and I can understand the stories better with the graphical representation.
I would recommend this book to those who would expect something to read that would change their whole perspective of life. The stories had something in common and that is "life is always simple and unpredictable"
