Review of Surviving Life As An Actor
Surviving Life As An Actor by Jerry A. Greenberg is a fiction based on the struggles that an actor has to go through before gaining fame or limelight. It is the story of Marnie Goldin and her friends who want to be in the business of entertainment as actors and writers. This is their journey of struggle, starting since they took admission in University of Southern California.
Marnie, the protagonist of the story, a hard-working and determined girl from New Jersey, arrives at the University of Southern California with a dream of becoming an actress. She meets Lorraine, Carter, Leon and Donnie there, some were pursuing theater the same as hers while others were in the writing department. All become good friends and support each other in stabilizing and making their career as actors and scriptwriters. With all the ups and downs in their personal lives, the story goes on to show whether they succeed or fail?
The writing was uncomplicated and comprehensible. Even though Marnie was the central character, I am glad that the author has justified each character by giving them enough life background, which attracts equal attention of the readers to each of them. The rhythmic tempo of the story makes it more captivating. Author has beautifully touched the concept of friendship, determination, dedication and helplessness during struggling days of all the characters. I really enjoyed the part when Marnie met Brenda, and the way their past struggles brought them together as best friends. The realistic portrayal of helplessness of each character could be relatable at a point. Author has presented different types of demoralizing and lack of motivation periods in a person's life by the different characters. It also reflects the glimpse of variation in the parents-child relationship.
I have no complaints with this book. There were few errors. Although its simple writing makes it enamouring, many may find it mundane.
I would rate it 3 out of 4 stars. There were no issues with the story, but there were grammatical and spelling errors. I will recommend it to those who are interested to know about the backstory of real life successful actors. Jerry has done an incredible job in uncovering the struggles of the actors despite not being on the same field. I will also recommend it to those who are underdogs and are working day and night for their dreams. This story is really motivational, shows the power of good friendship and determination to one's dreams. However, due to its uncomplicated writing, I will not recommend it to sophisticated readers, they might be disappointed.
