First set in California, in the fictional city of Piure, Opaque begins with our main male character, Adam Caspian. Adam lives a darkened life full of confusing feelings, absolute hatred towards people and society, and his body acting up. He goes on for a while living in darkness until a new girl shows up at school. The unfamiliar girl is strange and different from all the others. They feel odd gravitation to each other despite the fact they do not get along too well. Some events happen, and after a while, they start to like each other more, and bit by bit, they grow closer. They tell each other about their lives and secrets, but some of them are kept quiet. Adam with his dark life at home, and Carly with some secret abilities. Adam soon discovers that he, too, has special abilities like Carly. But before they can celebrate, Carly's mother, Dauma, calls her to go back to Minnesota because something terrible happened. Together with newfound friends and family they meet in Minnesota, they discover more about themselves and what they can do. And through hard work, blood, sweat, and tears, they face their greatest foes, power-craving, immoral scientists and learn to live their lives as Descendants.

Opaque, written by Calix Leigh-Reign, is a riveting young adult fantasy novel. The book is written in a first-person narrative, and because it is written in this way, the characters are easier to understand, especially with Adam’s complicated personality. The plot, characters, setting, and writing style are executed excellently. I love it! It made me feel a lot of emotions, caught my attention, and kept me turning pages. This story is definitely one of my top favorites for the month.

As a whole, I have no negative points for this story. Although, the beginning was a little uncomfortable to read for me. But other than that little discomfort, it was a fantastic read!

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it's a great, well-written story with almost zero mistakes in spelling and grammar. Calix Leigh-Reign did a marvelous job of making the characters lovable. I love some of the different accents displayed in the story, especially Dauma’s accent.

I recommend this book to young adults and adults who like reading fantasy, romance, and action. Because this is the first book in a series, I also recommend this book to people who enjoy committing to reading series. And I most definitely recommend this book for people who are looking for a great read to add to their collection.
