Review of The Different Kinds Of Monsters
[Following is a volunteer review of "The Different Kinds Of Monsters" by Seth Chambers.]
The Different Kinds of Monsters by Seth Chambers is a adventurous, inauspicious, multi-perspectuve story told in the first person narrative. It follows a boy-turns-man named Dylan Armitage's life events as well as Emily's, a dinosaur from the late Jurassic period. By some unforseen twist of fate, Emily is brought back to life from her endless slumber. She goes on to make the Armitage clan her target of prey. After almost causing Dylan's father's demise, she turns her attention to Dylan and his daughter, Madison.
The Armitage bloodline is the reason for Emily's restless afterlife. Before she entered a state that seemed so peaceful and pleasing, she vowed to to hunt all those who would disturb this delightful sleep. Dylan and his family never stayed in one place for long. He wondered about this and about why, everywhere they went, Emily would soon follow. When she showed, it would not be long before they loaded their things and moved on. It was only as an adult that he finally learned the reasons why. Now, Emily was after him and Madison. He did not mind his own life being in danger. In fact he welcomed it, but when it came to his little girl, he would do anything to protect her. Even charge the beast head on. This may cause him to break his promises, but he didn't care. As long as he could keep Maddy from harm.
In my opinion, the book was a good read. It is insightful regarding what life would have been like for creatures in the prehistoric era. Having a solid back story for the main characters helps understand and relate tothem to some extent. The devided, yet strong, family bond between the Armitages is a good aspect. And as an added bonus, it has drama. Apart from a few errors, it captivatesthe imagination with suspense bordering on the supernatural genre.
Although the book was intriguing, it does jump from one timeline to the next. This can cause the reader to lose focus and confuse the reader, which in turn may be the reason for loss of interest. I suggest reading it when there are minimal to no distraction.
I have to say I enjoyed reading the book. However, I also have a strong belief in one's own opinion. Some fiction fans may not like the prehistoric element. Therefore, I am rating this book 2 out of 4 stars. I would go on to say read it, as it may surprise you.
This book is, without a doubt, not suitable for younger or sensitive readers. The book not only contains levels of vulgar language, but also scenes of an abusive nature that will be categorized as both gender based and child abuse.

Venturing into this book is like venturing inside the den of a monster. I was surprised by it and at times hated Dylan and his actions. But the end was extremely satisfying for me. I believe your rating is justified and I agree with your perspective, although I gave it a 3-star rating. Thank you for the enjoyable review.
