“Autism Goes to School” by Dr. Sharon A. Mitchell is the first book in the School Daze series. It is a fictional book that shows the struggle of a father learning how to be a good parent. This novel explores themes such as love, family, fatherhood, change, and sacrifice. This story shows how human connections form in unexpected times and places. It is a touching story of a single father putting his son before his own needs and the challenges they face.

Ben abruptly finds out that he is a father. Not only did he just learn that he is a father but that his son is Autistic. Ben suddenly receives full custody of his son Kyle after never meeting his son before. Now Ben is faced with the challenge of learning to be a father of an Autistic boy. Ben quickly learns that having a son that is Autistic will be difficult. Ben takes Kyle to register him for school and learns how sensitive children with Autism can be.

Melanie Nicols' is Kyle’s new Kindergarten teacher. Ben and Melanie at first do not like each other but as they both have Kyle’s best interest at heart they learn to work together for Kyle. Melanie helps Ben with Kyle and discovers that he truly loves his son and makes numerous changes as he learns to accommodate Kyle. Ben is a full time working accountant and discovers that he is going to have to make some changes at work and in his condo to be able to take care of Kyle. Ben struggles as a single parent while falling in love with the joys of parenthood. This touching story details the journey between Ben, Kyle, and Melanie as we look through Ben’s eyes.

I enjoyed this book. There is a lot of information about Autism and how different children that are Autistic react. The book has a lot of sensory techniques that are used with children that are Autistic but the information is presented in a way that is enjoyable for those who are not familiar with Autism. There are many challenges that are faced that even children who are not Autistic experience. Parents would find humor in the challenges that this father has to overcome reflecting on their own challenges in child rearing. This book was a truly enjoyable way to learn about how Autism affects adults and children.

For the most part I enjoyed this book. The only thing I disliked about the book is that parts of it were redundant. The author will explain things in detail in one chapter and then explain the same thing in detail again later on. Some statements were made in earlier chapters came up again later and seemed redundant as they should go without saying because of previous dialogue between certain characters. Despite these minor setbacks I did enjoy this book because it was a fun story that was informative at the same time.

I am not familiar with Autism and the struggles that it ensues. This book was an informative and enjoyable read. A reader does not need to be familiar with Autism to enjoy this book. It is a good story with a bit of romance. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars and recommend it as a good book to read.
