My Friend Marilyn by Christopher Lentz has a very intriguing storyline. One that straddles the realms of both history and fiction. Normally I do not gravitate towards this particular period in history but the premise of this book was too unique to ignore.

The story surrounds the main protagonist Penny Parker a cashier for the local five and dime store. She is surprised to find out she has won a contest she never entered. The prize? Being assistant to none other then Marilyn Monroe herself! It just so happens that in 1958 Ms. Monroe will be doing some on location scenes in Penny’s home town of Coronado California. Leading up to her big moment in the spotlight we come to find out that Penny is consistently being harassed by others for her weight. She pokes fun at herself for being a bit huskier then the average girl. However she doesn’t let her size stop her from being perfectly honest, quirky and having a cute mismatched pair of earrings for every occasion.

Her and Marilyn hit it off right away when they meet and a myriad of hijinks and adventure ensues in this wonderful town. Penny learns that the only thing standing in the way of her dreams is herself because she can indeed have it all.

This book is wonderfully well written. Full of wonderful meanings and positive messages for women of all ages and sizes. It’s a tale of loyalty, love, perseverance and a wholesome feeling that is sadly lacking in today’s day and age. Some minor profanity and sexual content is found within the book. In my opinion it was tastefully done and not vulgar by any stretch. I would see no issue in a teenager picking up and reading this book.

I give this book 3 out of 4stars. The only reason I did not give it 4 stars was there was one or two elements in the book that I felt didn’t entirely jive with the storyline but I believe that stems from my own personal feelings towards that aspect of the story and nothing to do with the content itself. All in all I have already started recommending this lovely read to all my friends.
