Review of The Crystilleries of Echoland
Over the years, children mysteriously vanish without a trace. No one knows where they go or who is responsible for their disappearances. Once these children are gone, none return, that is until one boy defies all possibilities and returns with a wolf and a falcon. It's unclear why Will Clearly came back after vanishing alongside his twin sister Emmy, and she did not. Will attempts to move on while his parents neglect him to search for their daughter. One day Will decides to investigate Emmy's disappearance and his unexplained return revealing a dark secret, which forces him to return to a place he's forgotten but needs to remember to save his sister. Will arrives in Echoland, a mystical translucent world filled with magic and illusions. In Echoland, Will learns that the occupants call themselves Echo's and are replicants of people from Will's world known as Sounds. The revelation leads Will on a heroic adventure, disguising himself to survive and making friends along the way. Together they uncover a mystery that could restore and save both worlds.
I enjoyed the Audiobook, which is fast-paced and keeps you guessing what's going to happen next. The narrator B.J. Harrisons voice captured my attention and managed to lure me into the captivating story by transforming his tone to suit each character's personality. I adored the characters and their uniquenesses, especially the antagonist, who made me suspicious from the beginning but mischievously managed to throw me off a couple of times. I also enjoyed the ever-watchful eyes of the orbs and the way the Fate sealers lurked around, spying on everyone.
I sometimes found it hard to keep up with the story's premise. I felt lost and unable to decipher what was happening as I took in heaps of new information, characters and plot twists. The story starts off capturing your attention but then tends to lose clarity towards the middle of the book and finally redeems itself at the end.
I enjoyed the fascinating world of Echoland and the adventure I got to accompany the protagonist on; I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. The writer Dew Pellucid is exceptionally talented in which he creates a diverse world filled with magic, mystery and excitement.
I recommend The Crystilleries of Echoland to young adults as the book's themes delve deeper into darker ones, such as death. Younger middle-grade readers might become triggered by the lack of compassion involved in the Fate Sealers killings or by the violence of some scenes.
