How to be successful: Think like a leader by M. Curtis McCoy is an inspirational and self-help book. What do you mean by success? What steps do you need to be successful? How to build quality friendships? What is time management? Is success only about financial growth? What is personality development? How does your attitude define you? To get answers to such questions, you must read this book.

M.Curtis McCoy was diagnosed with Type I diabetes in his early childhood. By the age of 27, he became a successful young man, owning companies in several industries. Everything was good until he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Despite all the struggles, he did not want to give up. He strove to make a difference in the world.

This book is a compilation of the author’s own life experiences and interviews with successful people. After his diagnosis, he started a blog as a hobby to help people achieve their goal. Later on, he took it seriously which led to the development of this book- How to be successful: Think like a leader. The purpose of this book is to inspire people and it shows us a different perspective of life.

In this book, the author interviewed several successful people and leaders. They were asked the same set of questions and every individual’s answers were inspiring. It showcased real life experiences that were faced and the ways they did to overcome them. I usually am not a fan of self-help books as some of them seem to be unrealistic and just pages filled with advice. But this book is definitely not one of them. It was good to hear stories of successful people. I get demotivated when something unlikely happens. But after reading this book, I understood that life isn’t a bed of roses. Facing struggles and overcoming them are a part of your journey to success.

M.Curtis McCoy talks about various subjects such as “Six keys to building quality friendships”, “Improving your attitude”, “Developing winning habits” and so on. One of the topics that I liked the most is from Chapter 5 – Stop comparing yourself. It is generally mistaken that comparing ourselves to others keeps us wanting for the better. But it makes us feel inferior. Everyone is unique. Everyone has their own style of achieving things. So never compare yourself to others. I found the interview with Jeff Wobig on Chapter 6 to be interesting. I particularly liked his reply to the question “How do you make important decisions?” His answers were practical and relatable. He replied “No is not an answer. You never quit. There’s always a solution”.

There is no such thing that I disliked. This book fulfilled its whole purpose of assisting people in leadership qualities, self-development.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book is written in an exemplary way with no errors in spelling. There’s no use of profanity and is well-edited.

I recommend it to readers who like motivational books and to those who want to be successful. However, this book contains some biblical references. So non-religious readers might not like it.
