Do you believe in past lives? Have you ever felt familiar with a person even though you only met the person for the first time? If you are looking for a pure romance novel with a little twist, Yesterday by Samyann is a great choice for you. It is a historical fiction that is set in present day Chicago, but is also connected to the historical Chicago fire. A young lady, named Amanda, heroically saves a man’s life from an accident. When their eyes meet, Amanda feels like she has met him before, although she has never met him. The man, Mark, feels the same way towards her. Shortly after, they start dating, but Amanda hesitates to be in a relationship with him. Amanda has had such a disastrous life, and she is traumatized. However, their mysterious deep connection cannot separate them. They decided to find out why they felt like they knew each other. With Amanda’s god mother Mary’s help, they investigate their past lives, and they find a surprising fact from back in the 1800s.

The positive aspect of this novel is that Samyann successfully illustrates each characters' emotions and details in each scene. The author never misses any small details to explain what the characters are thinking, and the surrounding situations. It makes the story very imaginable, so I felt like I was watching a movie in my mind while I was reading this book. One more thing I like about this novel is that there is a little twist in the story. Unlike other romantic novels, this story is not a simple love story. A woman and a man having a deep connection from their past lives is something new, and it makes this novel very unique.

The negative aspect of this book is that it would have been better if there were more stories about their past lives’ romance. Investigating their past lives is sort of the main part of this book, but I would like to know a bit more about how they fell in love with each other and how they spent their days together in their past lives. I wish there were more romantic stories in it. The past life romance was too short and lacking in details for me.

I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. If you are a historical fiction fan, you will definitely enjoy this book. You can learn about the actual historical events and enjoy a romantic story. It is like killing two birds with one stone. I was also impressed by the author and how she successfully illustrates Amanda and Mark overcoming the crisis in their relationship due to Amanda’s trauma from her disastrous life. Fear of losing someone you love is one of the main themes of this book, and Samyann did an amazing job writing about this difficult topic. This book was also professionally edited. I did not see any major mistakes that bothered me. My only discontent is I just wish there were more details about their past lives romance.

I would recommend Yesterday by Samyann to historical fiction lovers and older teens. There is a bit of cursing and some sexual scenes but not many and not very detailed, so it is acceptable. I think this book is a good first novel for teens to learn about romantic relationships and history at the same time.
