I rate this book, The Prodigy Slave, Book One: Journey to Winter Garden, 4 out of 4 Stars. The story was well written and edited. It captured my attention from the first chapter. I was drawn in by the Slavery Articles with their definitions trying to imagine how humans could create such atrocious laws about another race.

As I began reading about Lily’s life, I found myself eager to learn more. It was hard for me to pull away and stop reading. Her life and the characters created were so tangible. The descriptions of the types of people from the small minded slave owners, like Jesse, to those who were more evolved, like William, make them life like. The author, Londyn Skye gave insight to the thoughts of these characters making them real. Her description was thorough and realistic.

It was a gripping tale, full of highs and some tragic lows. As I read, I felt like each scenario was so well describe I could picture the scene in my mind. I also found myself very emotional during some scenes of Lily’s journey. My heart was on a roller coaster ride eagerly waiting from what would happen next. There were times when I felt an anxiety and wanted to reach in and help. I loved detail of the background and places the story unfolds in.

I would encourage anyone from their late teens up to read this book. It challenges the mind while taking you on a journey. Even though this period of time was not long ago in our history, it is good to preview to what life may have been like for slaves and their owners. It is a time, we as a society have seen pictured in movies and shows, but not lived through. Some may have heard some first accounts from relatives who lived it, but this story provides a good account of that time. I found the book educational as well as a good read.

The scenario is a work of fiction, but the laws were real. The articles stated and described were laws people lived by. I am glad to have read this book and highly recommend others to join the journey. The story is awesome and heart wrenching at times, but worth the read. This book is the first of three. I am looking forward to continuing on this journey Lily has set out on.
