Review by kimoy13 -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is an exciting sci-fi novel, ideal for young adult readers. I would recommend that persons aged 16 years and older read it as there are a lot of violent scenes and some minor sexual content.
In this novel, the reader learns of a number of Russian families who would have undergone genetic mutations, hundreds of years ago. As a result, these persons can alter matter and even control the elements. These changes have also passed on from generation to generation.
A group of scientists have been hunting these families down to determine the secret to their powers. The scientists hope to become as powerful as these Russian families, even if it means torturing and killing them. In a bid to protect themselves, these families have scattered across the world and are in hiding.
It is in the midst of this drama that teenaged Adam, the main character, finds himself. Indeed, Adam is portrayed as being weird, unpleasant and even dangerous. The reader will see that he also has a strained relationship with his parents. As the novel progresses, Carly, a new student at Adam's school, is seen to be the only person capable of bringing out Adam's softer side. The reader will also see how Adam and Carly fit into the larger plot in this novel, which was mentioned above.
A number of issues are also discussed in this book. The many problems encountered in family life are highlighted. The importance of love and friendship is also explored in this novel. The reader will also encounter the power and danger of science to humankind.
I particularly like the fact that there are many twists and turns in this novel. This factor retains the engagement of the reader. There is also limitless action, which promises to keep the reader on the edge of his seat.
Everything also comes full circle. As the novel progresses, the reader is supplied with more information on certain characters. This enables the reader to better understand why some characters take certain actions. Characters who may have been disliked earlier on in the novel, may inspire sympathy and support from the reader later on.
It is also to be noted that in spite of the many ups and downs, this novel ends on a note of hope and love. The fact that the Russian language and sayings are also featured in this novel, further showcases Leigh-Reign's talent for maintaining authenticity in her novels. This factor will surely be appreciated by her readers.
Leigh-Reign also includes illustrations at the start of her most important chapters. In my view, this tactic adds more depth to their content. For example, she uses a drawing of Adam and Carly at the start of the chapter which focuses on their friendship.
I truly cannot think of anything that I did not like in this novel. It is very exciting and eye-opening. I have read many books in recent times and I can honestly say that this is the best edited book that I have come across. The writing is near immaculate which makes this novel an easy read.
Persons of all religions can readily enjoy this book as no reference to religion is made in it. Sensitive readers will of course have to remember that there are violent scenes and some sexual content. However, these are not excessive and actually enhance the storyline.
After careful consideration, I can only rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It truly is an amazing read. I am eager to read book 2.
