The Fox by M. N. J. Butler is a historical masterpiece of dialogue, information, and notarial fascination in the use of language. The story of the book, set in the time of ancient Greek, portrays the lives of kings, their wives, their children¸ their associations, their foray of dinner parties, their relationships, and the interacts that exist. The book spoke of rumors of wars, actual wars, peace, and the brutality of these wars. The results of which were heartaches and pains that were the reality of those who were affected. The book wrote the history of that ancient society and its citizenry. These citizens were of Ancient Geek and included the Corinthians, the Macedonians, the Spartans, and their commitment to fighting for their countries.

Butler’s description of Sparta captivated my imagination. I at once envisioned myself in that space, relaxing in a hammock of straws retreating in respite with no thought of another hour nor day of misery and discontent. His description of the surroundings traced my mind’s eye to the scene of the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible. This book depicts celestial beauty and glory of unceasing bliss of joy and rejoicing. Hear what he says. Spring’s breezes, carrying the scent of the golden apple-blossoms. Summer’s barley, standing high in the fields, like a green, rippling sea. Autumn, and the aroma of grapes ripening on their vines. Look down from a mountain-top, and you will see but fields and fruit orchards, bounded by straight rows of olive trees.

I liked the inclusion of the glossary of names and the terms. The list of words helped me to understand what I was reading. Good job with that inclusion.

The historical information gave life to the book. My familiarity with history from a biblical point of view strengthened my understanding of the message conveyed. However, the book
was not necessarily the easiest to read. The layout dazzled my eyes. There were unnecessary use of open and close punctuation marks and open and close brackets. I also found misused words and one minor use of foul language. For those who enjoy the events of the ancient world of the Greeks, this book would appeal to you.

I somewhat enjoyed the book because I like history and the use of language. However, the editors were not careful in editing the contents of the book. I give this book, The Fox a
score of 3 stars out of 4 stars.
