Review by OwlRoads -- The Secrets To Living A Fantastic...
The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life by Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka is a nonfiction self-help book explaining 13 “golden pearls” of wisdom the authors have learned through overcoming traumatic life experiences. According to them, these are 13 pieces of advice to consider in one’s daily life in order to increase happiness, motivation, and success.
I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not rate it 3 stars for many reasons. First, the book seems to be edited professionally. I discovered only 2 minor typos in the entire novel. Also, nonfiction has a tendency to give information in chunks that comes off choppy and thrown together haphazardly. This book lets the information flow freely due to its unique writing style, with conversations between the two authors as they give the reader advice. This makes everything feel much more natural and light-hearted, especially because of the friendly banter. Each chapter and “golden pearl” transitions well into the next. In the end of one chapter they will mention something that ties in perfectly with the following one. I could tell it was thought through and planned well.
My favorite part of the book was the abundance of metaphors, fables, and short stories of the authors’ lives sprinkled throughout the book. They help the reader understand how to apply the “golden pearls” to their own lives, while getting to know the authors better. The thing I disliked most about the book was that the dialogue between authors sometimes felt unnatural or forced. While most of the conversations are believable, every once in a while they said something really cheesy that took me out of the book and was a bit jarring. However, this is really me nitpicking. For the most part I really enjoyed reading the book!
I believe this book would most appeal to adults, especially those who are unhappy with their current life or tend to be pessimistic. This is because most of the tips and explanations are geared towards adults, as they discuss work, parenting, and relationships. I would not recommend this book to children or those who do not like hearing about violence or health issues. The book talks in detail about both the authors’ near-death experiences. They tackle serious issues that require a good level of maturity, as well as some heart-breaking stories. I would advise those who are sensitive to stalking, medical complications, mental illnesses, or eating disorders not to read this book.
Overall, I absolutely loved reading The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life. The things Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka wrote really stuck with me. Even after I had finished the book I couldn’t help thinking about their advice! That’s especially important for self-help books because the goal is for readers to apply the tips in their everyday lives. I highly recommend this novel!
