Janet McNulty’s book Solaris Seethes is an exhilarating story of a heroin, Rynah, who is flung into a mission to exact revenge for her planet. A man by the name of Klanor discovered that there is truth to a prophecy that was previously believed to be a childhood myth. Klanor acts by stealing Lanyr’s crystal, which provided balance and stability to his and Rynah’s home planet. Without that crystal, the planet immediately starts to crumble. Klanor, having Lanyr’s crystal in hand, goes to find the others scattered throughout the galaxy in attempt to harness their immense power of destruction. Klanor’s wicked betrayal sends Rynah into action. With the help of Solaris, an extremely intelligent ship crafted by Rynah’s late grandfather Marlow, Rynah is able to gather four individuals to help fulfill the prophecy and stop Klanor’s malicious plan. Solaris uses her advanced technology to search across space and time to pull four very different individuals from their homes. Each one has special attributes that the prophecy requires in order to stop Klanor. Rynah and her rag tag group of humans embark in a race to fine the rest of the crystals before Klanor can get his hands on them.

With a seamless blend of humor and suspense, McNulty’s story has the capability to capture the hearts of anyone who has a thirst for adventure. This book can pique the interests of both the young adult and adult audiences. This story is exciting and refreshing. The characters had depth and detail that brought them to life in a multitude of ways. Throughout their journey, the characters start to discover a strength within them that they never knew existed. I believe that each and every reader can find a piece of themselves in any one of the characters. The last detail I would like to applaud is the use of illustrations throughout the novel. This detail delighted my inner child and added a bit of spark to the book.

However, this book was not perfect. There were some very minor things that I didn’t necessarily love. At times, there were areas that I thought could use a bit more of a description. These parts seemed a bit unclear and lacked detail that could have really helped the reader. I was left questioning how or why the characters made the decisions that they did. There were no details explaining their thought processes or any clear decision making. There was also a lack of detail and explanation when it came to the technology used in the book. I feel like the storyline could have benefited from a bit more details in those areas. Other than that and the rare grammatical error, this book was beautifully written.

I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. I was really tempted to give this book a 4 out of 4 but there were some areas where I found myself confused. This book did have a few grammatical bumps, but not so much that it ruined the entire experience. I will still recommend this book to all science fiction fans and anyone who is looking for a fun and light read. Science Fiction is usually not the genre I gravitate towards, but this book had me loving every page. The storyline was action packed from the very first chapter and kept that same energy throughout. If anyone is debating diving into this series, I would say go for it. You will not be disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Solaris Seethes and can’t wait to see what is next for Rynah and her group in the following installments of the series.
