The Reel Sisters is an intriguing tale of friendships and fly fishing in the wilds of North America.

The first few pages introduce the reader to the main characters.....five women with differing backgrounds. Each chapter introduces a new personality. The author, Michelle Cummings, then cleverly draws them together and proceeds to establish a very special bond between them.

Rose, the eldest, is the one who comes forward as the leader and cements them together but gradually the others are seen to develop their characters. They offer emotional support to each other which, it turned out, they all needed. It's a sensitive story of how this group of women deals with their personal challenges and is able to offer strength to each other. I loved the feeling of comradeship and fun and I could sense the feeling of release as they laughed and laughed about the silliest of incidents.

The settings in the wilderness were an essential part of the story as the characters were completely taken away from their day to day worries and responsibilities with no distractions apart from the river, the beautiful fish, and the extreme focus required for netting them.

On the whole, I enjoyed The Reel Sisters although at times I found the detail slightly tedious. Too much time spent on the intricacies of fly fishing tackle. It was as though the author needed to pad out the story. This would be interesting for those who actually fly fish or are thinking of taking up the hobby. On the whole, I’m not a big fan of fishing as a sport and I found it slightly annoying that all the women who were randomly brought together had no doubts about the subject. For this reason, those who enjoy fly fishing would love The Reel Sisters and if you are thinking of taking up the hobby I’m sure you will be very keen to find the nearest river bank.

The characters become so close, like sisters, and the author develops friendships beautifully. I particularly liked the relationship between Rose and Melody. The older woman, who was at first portrayed as the sensible one, and the young privileged rebel who needed to find her way through life.
The storyline touched on all of their normal everyday lives, their relationships with their partners, and issues that many will be able to identify with. The reality of single parenting, the anxiety of wives of servicemen when their partners are away, the emotional conflicts of life, and death are all subjects which were touched upon.

I found myself anticipating a disaster all the way through. I was waiting for something pretty horrible to happen...
My rating is 3 out of 4 stars.
