Laurence Thornberry an American has decided to spend a year in Japan pertaining to his recruitment at the "Slop Bucket" school as an English teacher.
Laurence is all excited to explore the new country and its culture but at the same time is clueless as to know and how of the country. However, on the recommendation of an online friend Harry Ballse he checks in at inn called Happy House.
Upon reaching there he finds out that both the inn and its residents are filthy, queer and non-appealing. On the other hand, the place of his work is no less than a madhouse itself. No one in Slop Bucket is neither interested in learning or teaching English.
So on recommendation and with the help of his co-residents at the Happy House, he starts his own school at the inn called "The Golden Shower". The school turns out to be a great success everything seems to go smooth now in Laurence's life, he's now getting acquainted with Japanese culture and getting along well with the residents too.
Like how good things come to an end the same thing seems to happen with Lawerence too when the monsoon arrives. The inn seems to get flooded with the fungus and moss. Also, a mysterious creature called Crat begins to appear which is like an ill - omen to the inn and its residents.
I've never in my life read something so queer and disgusting and yet loved it!
This book is an absolute page-turner which always leaves the reader wanting for more. I loved how the author gave a sinister twist to the immaculate Japanese culture that we all know. All the characters in the book are really interesting but I did really wanted a get a deep insight into each character and know their backstory too. Not only the characters but I also wanted to get a back story of the Happy House and also of the town as to why it was so queer. But unfortunately, the book doesn't mention any of that sort. But the ending definitely just swept me off the ground it was like a cherry on top. Although gruesome and unexpected it did wrap up the book really well.
I would recommend this book to all the Murakami fans out there. Just like Murakami books this book has an air of mystery surrounding it. But I wouldn't recommend it anyone below 16 years because the book does have plenty of lewd and sexual content. But anyone who wants to read something new this book is a must with its fresh, sinister, queer and twisted storyline.
