Review by hyuga_hanabi -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
[Following is a volunteer review of "Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign.]
Opaque is the first book of the Scion Saga by Calix Leigh-Reign. It's a science fiction book with the added touch of young love. It has both adventure and romance in it. The book also explores the area of teenage problems.
Adam is a troubled teenager with a very dark mind. He considers everyone around him as animals. The only person he actually loves is his mother and that too is not a very healthy feeling. These complex emotions and his very dark and violent thoughts are what initially define him but he has a huge character development after meeting a girl named Carly, who is a newcomer at his school. Adam, who always resented having any kind of social interaction, suddenly finds himself intrigued by her.
Carly is a very strong minded girl who idolises her mother. Carly too takes an interest in Adam, when she sees him in her class but does not agree with his disrespectful behaviour towards others. Both eventually do end up in a relationship but before they have time to figure things out, they have to deal with forces far superior to them. Adam discovers his family secret through Carly and learns to master the gifts he has been given.
The various stages through which Adam travels with Carly in order to become a genuinely good person is very interesting to read. The level of maturity and calmness that Carly depicts is very impressive and a testament to the way she was raised by her parents. Both Carly and Adam have to deal with their own family issues and heartbreaks which brings them even closer.
There are a few large scale battle scenes which are very well described and explained. Adam and Carly join up with a few other teenagers who all share the same circumstances for an ultimate battle to ensure their freedom. Adam has a difficult time adjusting to the fact that there are so many people better and stronger then him but at the same time he doesn't resent his new friends. In fact he develops a certain amount of respect for them. Carly's mother becomes kind of like a teacher to Adam and helps him get stronger and he admires her strength and the way she carries herself.
The book has a very good collection of characters with varying personalities. All of them coming together to achieve a common goal makes the story extra special. All the plot points are very well explained. Once you start reading this book, it's very hard to put it away until you have finished it. Calix has a way of keeping his readers involved in the book right till the end.
I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars, because I feel it is very well written and edited. I could not spot any errors to report. Any reader looking for adventure, romance or science fiction can find good worth in this book. I am very excited to read the next book from this series.
