Adam Caspian experiences his biokenretic abilities, such as telekinesis, at the age of sixteen. Along with his unique abilities, Adam has obsessive and inappropriate thoughts about his mother. Although his mother is his refuge, Adam despises social interactions with others because he believes them to be “animals” that are shaped by society. However, one glance at the new girl at school changes everything. Carly Wit is different from all of the other “animals”, and Adam knows that there is something special about her because of his instant connection to her. After developing a close relationship with Carly, Adam’s destructive ways are controlled, and he learns about his mutation. Adam’s lineage comes from a very powerful group of mutated individuals known as the Descendants. His new powers must be kept secret because there is a dangerous group of individuals, the Iksha, that wants to use Adam’s abilities for something evil. Adam teams up with his new family and friends in order to defeat their common enemy. Secrets and lies start out as acts of protection, but will the effect – the feeling of deception – end up being better or worse than the overwhelming truth that unravels as Adam searches for answers about the past?

Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a science fiction fantasy book for young adults. The novel has an intriguing storyline that revolves around distinctive qualities, such as mutated Limbal Rings (LR), Russian language and lineage, and abnormal abilities. Calix’s phenomenal and creative writing style allows the reader’s imagination to flourish, especially during the discovery of divergent individuals with supernatural powers – the Descendants. The text is very well-written because the author’s word choice flows easily and flawlessly, which allows the reader to easily comprehend what is going on in the story.

The element that I liked the most was the author’s use of personification. An example of personification is from chapter one: “The wind fights with the trees and they fight back. The wind is always the victor. It howls in pain until his paroxysms ends, then it seemingly falls into a peaceful slumber.” Personification was used throughout the entire book, which allowed me to thoroughly imagine the scenes. The vivid descriptions reeled my attention in and invited my mind to eavesdrop on what was happening in the characters’ lives. Calix’s use of personification was absolutely astonishing, and the precision of word choice really opened my mind to a creative world.

The element that I disliked the most was that the main character had lustful intentions, not only toward his mother, but toward other females as well. Although Adam was experiencing puberty, the vague sexual assault mentioned was inappropriate and makes Adam seem like the villain at the beginning of the book. The novel Opaque deserves a score of 4 out of 4 stars because the storyline was very intriguing, and I enjoyed learning about characters with extraordinary powers. Although there were a few errors, such as misspellings and spatial errors, the author knew how to capture my attention. The book does not deserve a score of 1, 2, or 3 because the storyline was so fascinating.

I recommend the book to readers who love sci-fi fantasy, superheroes, characters with supernatural abilities, romance, close relationships, and family. There was not much profanity, so the book is appropriate for young adult readers. Although mentioned vaguely, sexual content is in the book, such as onanism, so readers sensitive to sexual content should be aware of that. There are a few inappropriate scenes, such as murder, violence, and inexplicit sexual assault. Readers who are sensitive to such behaviors may want to avoid the book. With all of that being said, Opaque was a luring book that will take the reader into an imaginative world full of uniqueness and wonder. It was difficult to stop reading because of the magnificent work, so I hope everyone will enjoy Calix’s creation as much as I did.
