Review by Cydjane01 -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Opaque is book one in the Scion Saga by Calix Leigh-Reign. This young adult novel was an action-packed self-discovery story following, Adam Caspian, his family, and friends on a unique journey that changes him forever.
In the beginning, we meet Adam in Piure, California, in a very dark state. He feels a disconnect with a lot of the people he interacts with day to day, except for his mother, Joann. Adam is an angry and isolated 16-year-old carrying disdain regularly towards everyone he comes across. As his character continues to be revealed layer at a time, secrets that eat away at Adam come to light. Stuck in this perpetual routine of self-isolation, Adam receives a curve-ball; her name is Carly.
New in town, Carly Wit walks into Adam’s homeroom and immediately leaves him speechless. Confused with his feelings, Adam can’t decide whether he wants to be around her or not. Until fate presents herself, and Adam has the chance to be kind to her. Making a move to ask her on a date, Carly and Adam become closer than ever, until things at home disrupt the happiness created. Emotionally destroyed by the new obstacles in his life, Adam winds up in a life-changing accident that opened up a whole new world for him.
With the life that he has come accustomed to unraveling at his feet, Adam searches without delay for the truth he desperately desired. Carly helps Adam piece together the puzzle of his life, eventually concluding that Adam is not normal. How does she know? Because Carly is not normal either.
The great things about this novel are the character development, especially Adam. He has the most significant transformation from start to finish, and second to him is Carly. The world-building of this novel was excellent; the backstories of Adam and Carly were thorough. I enjoyed the science of the powers listed throughout the second half of the story.
What I enjoyed most was the dynamic Carly had with her mother. I felt appreciation for the way their relationship established itself and the way Carly loved her mom. There was even an instance I shed a tear for their relationship. A lot of Carly’s relationship with her mom was preparation to fly from the nest and spread her wings.
What I liked least is the way Adam and his odd and mean behaviors occur at the beginning of the story. I found it extremely strange that he had a more than motherly connection to his mom, along with the terrible situation he got himself into with the missing girl mentioned in the beginning. His character also called other people animals, to express his dislike for them. How Adam acted and carried himself beforehand was painful to read and angered me at some points. However, his transformation that I mentioned in the paragraph above was amazing, and I loved the young man he had grown to be!
I am rating this novel 4 out of 4 stars. The writing was entertaining, especially in the heat of the action. The way Leigh-Reign used words was fantastic, and I learned some new words too! Opaque is professionally edited; there were no flaws in grammar or punctuation. Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is an exciting science fiction story that left me on my toes once the story took off running. I would recommend to Sci-fi readers, older teens around the age of 17 and up, and fantasy readers. I would not recommend to anyone that is under the age of 17, anyone who is sensitive to the topic of kidnapping and rape, anyone who isn’t a fan of the young adult category.
