A Portrait of Mommy, Expressions of Love, Faith, and Perseverance is a short but interesting biography of Mrs. Ellawese Darden her daughter- J. L. Coston. In it, J.L. Coston tells an inspiring story of childhood, the teenage challenges and adulthood of her mother, fondly called Mommy in a very beautiful way. Mommy was the only child of her parents who did their best to earn an honest living. They had a great family life which was disrupted once in a while by unpleasant circumstances. How the family fared in those periods of trying times and Mrs Ellawese's rise from being a small, timid girl to being a powerful woman of faith, are major elements of the story. The book may also be described as an autobiography because it was written as if Mrs. Ellawese was writing it by herself.

I was inspired by the preface, and I enjoyed reading about her mum’s Christian experience after she gave her life to Christ. It encouraged me to do better in that aspect of my life. So that I can enjoy such awesome benefits of serving God wholeheartedly.

It was sad to read about Mommy’s parents’ divorce. I was able to put myself in her shoes, and imagine how confused she must have felt, being torn by loyalty to both parties. The times when her dad picked up his gun were moments of anxiety for me, not knowing what would happen next. I was curious to know how her extended family intervened in the issue of the relationship between her father and his cousin whom he shot. I hope that the feelings of hurt were not passed on to their children and grandchildren.

I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because it was well edited and I found no errors in it. The plot was quite engaging and I appreciate the fact that it was short.

The book contains important lessons for parents. One of such is that they should not take matters lightly when their children report episodes of bullying at school or express a dislike for school often. There must be a reason for them to act that way. I think that the book was written in simple English which can be read and understood by everyone who can read a novel. Hence, I would recommend it to everyone because it has important lessons for the young and old. However, people who feel that biographies are boring or stereotyped because they are centered mostly on everyday life may not like to read it.
