Randy the Irresistible by S M Goodier is a quick, easy and light hearted read about a young, waste of space misogynist who somewhat over rates his own abilities to both con anyone out of anything from a free beer to bill free rent and to charm the knickers off women. The main character, aptly named Randy Love, will either make you laugh derisively or tear your hair out at his inability to sort his life out as he bumbles along from one self inflicted disaster to the next.

Randy has a healthy disrepect for nearly everyone but saves his worst for the female species who he considers to serve only one essential purpose, and typically just for one night. Highly critical and selective of a woman's physical attributes and age, he relies on his good looks and winning smile to score a shag and free bed for the night, hopefully with breakfast thrown in. He generally leaves a trail of disappointment and mess on the poor women who take him home for a night of passion. Don't let your sons read this book as an educational guide on how to treat the fairer sex! But will the controlling, sex machine of a girlfriend, Nicky, who takes over organising his life, eventually sort him out or will it end in tears?

Generally dismissive of the often brutal advice from his family and his father's long time friend and advisor Michael, Randy continues to make bad decisions, lose money and screw up his life, whilst everyone around him, including his group of old school chums, succeed in climbing career ladders, settling down and making families. Michael takes particular pleasure in ridiculing Randy about his lack of knowledge on just about everything. This irritates Randy immensely but could it be the kick up the backside he needs to change the direction of his life?

Littered with very British, colourful and creative language throughout, some of a sexual nature, this book will most likely appeal to the younger bloke. Saying that I'm a 50 year old female and I found it highly amusing. A good holiday book, I'd rate this a 3 out of 4 stars as something that won't tax your brain cells but will make you giggle if you're a girl - or snort if you're a bloke. The easily offended might be.... erm offended. However it was the ridiculous offensiveness of the character that I particularly enjoyed, taken with a hefty pinch of salt of course.

The only thing lacking in this book was a stronger ending, although perhaps as it is, it leaves room for a sequel, where we might see Randy growing up and transforming begrudgingly into a decent human being?
