Review by B_evans -- The Crystilleries of Echoland
The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid and narrated by B.J. Harrison is a fantastical mystery novel that will keep you fully immersed in a far-off world and at the edge of your seat as you follow Will in his first adventure.
At almost 13 years old, Will Cleary has already been through a lot. After disappearing at two years old with his twin sister and returning mysteriously a week later without her, he has never stopped searching for her. When he stumbles on an entrance to a parallel world, he may find himself in over his head. This mysterious land is filled with glassy copies of each person from his own world. They call themselves Echos, reflections of Sounds, which are normal humans from Will’s world.
As beautiful and magical as this winter universe is, there is unrest in the land. There is a law that states that when a Sound dies, the Echo must be put to death as well. The Fate Sealers enforce this law and are hunting Will who is in disguise as an Echo. Can Will avoid these evil hunters, find his sister, overthrow the King, and stop a murderer to protect the Echos and return their world to its rightful ruler?
The detailed and fantastical description of the magical wintery wonderland of Echoland was my favorite part of this book. It is rare to find a book that so perfectly balances the right amount of descriptive detail without weighing down the story. B.J. Harrison’s voice narration gives it that final touch to make you feel like you are in the story as it is described around you.
There are not a lot of negative things to be said about this book. It is, however, very fast paced and complex, so it is important to pay attention to details or risk getting lost in the web of villains, characters, and mysteries.
I was thoroughly impressed by B.J. Harrison’s narration. I wish he narrated all of my audiobooks! His voice has the perfect tenor and accent to listen to for long periods of time without getting tired of it. His unique voices for each of the characters were well done and very helpful during scenes of long dialogue.
I highly enjoyed this book and give it 4 out of 4 stars for its loveable characters, intricate plotline, and comprehensive closure. Older kids and teens are the audience that will enjoy this book the most. I would not recommend it for very young children as it has a complex storyline containing a small amount of violence.
