I reviewed a book titled A Portrait of Mommy by J.A. Coston. The book was a heartwarming story about the life and times of Ellawese Darden beginning with her birth on July 4th, 1929. Ellawese’s life story was an easy read with enlightened tales of her trials and tribulations supported by her faith. It begins with “peas”birth to Ernie and Maggie Darden in Jacksonville, Georgia and tells her story growing up with her, at times dysfunctional, parents and later her own struggles with men, addictions and the choices she will make.

I rated this book 2 out of 4 stars in part because I felt that the book failed to provide more in-depth commentary about her life’s stories. She lead a soulful and interesting life and some of her experiences were rushed through and I would have liked to have read more about them. Some of the stories only served as a taste of her life and could have used a bit more detail to completely immerse the reader in her storied life

The story was well written with correct grammar and spelling and appears to have been edited with great thought. It was very well presented and very easy to follow. The chapters were fairly short and concise in their storytelling.

I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to read a heart touching account of a proud woman who has preserved through life with the help of her deep faith and family. It serves as a gentle reminder that no matter your status or circumstances in life, with perseverance, faith in the Lord and the support of a loving family we can serve as uplifting examples to those around us.
