Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks, by Morton E Tavel, MD, is a non-fiction book which is designed to act as an eye-opener to the public on matters pertaining to health and well-being. Motivated by research from his previous book entitled Snake Oil is Alive and Well - The Clash Between Myths and Reality: Reflections of a Physician, the author uses scientifically proven facts to educate the audience, and free their minds from lies and unscientific ideologies, which have been imposed by unqualified and qualified persons. The book has 280 standard pages with a total of 62 chapters, each chapter discussing various topics such as coffee, cigarettes, green tea, salt, hypertension, junk food, bottled water, false cures, energy drinks, and the list continues.
This descriptive work is entirely based on science; in all his arguments, Dr. Tavel only uses concrete facts which he backs up with the most reliable scientifically documented information. There is no single page in which he has failed to apply factual explanation to the topic being discussed. As the human race, the sole survival of our species depends on the current state of our health, I cannot say that Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks was written for a particular audience. Everyone should read it. The book is suitable for a wide range of readers, but it certainly is a must-read for parents and health care providers.
Just like its title, this authentic composition is divided into three distinct parts: tips, myths, and tricks. Although I benefit from the first part due to some useful inside wire that could help me improve my health, the Myths part was my favourite, focused on some of the common legends that people have held for decades. One of such being the tale held against standard measles immunization procedure.
For a fact-based book that is entirely dependent on scientific principles, I must admit that it was surprisingly easy to read and understand. The author has tried his best to ensure that even a person who is not proficient in the field of science gets a piece of what he is talking about. I specifically liked how he summarizes each chapter in simple layman's terms. In my reading, I came across some technical words that at first seemed complex and I couldn't quite fathom what they meant, but in each instance, the conclusion always came to my rescue. The Doctor is also quite humorous, employing a tone to motivate you to turn page after page. For all the valuable information and the outstanding writing style, I will give Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks all the stars in the sky, but because I am limited to only four, it is a 4 out of 4 from me.
Throughout my reading, I encountered no editorial errors or any profane language. The book seems to be professionally edited so the score still stands as perfect.
