How would you feel if someone opened your eyes from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge? Very much grateful, I believe. This describes the feeling I had as I completed the book, Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks. Morton E. Tavel has left no stone unturned in discussing the 'secret' subjects of medicine.
The objective of this book is well-defined. Its chapters were arranged into three sections: myths, tricks, and tips. The section on tips addresses issues such as the influence of coffee, trans fat, green tea and even chocolate on health. It also addresses the use of pain killers, sunscreen, red meat, olive oil and so on. The section on myths discusses popular myths which are believed by many. Some of these myths promote useless and dangerous methods of treatment which waste time and resources. The last section on tricks thoroughly explains how to identify drug vendors who peddle 'wonder drugs' with bogus claims on their efficacy. I especially love the fact that specific brand names were mentioned, and comparisons were made in this section.
Today, the vast amount of information available on health issues can sometimes leave one feeling overwhelmed and utterly confused. Getting the truth on these matters could be as hard as digging for gold. However, Dr Tavel has brought these truths on a platter of gold. The topics covered in this book are incredibly vast. These topics were explained in simple and logical terms for easy comprehension.
The wealth of experience possessed by the author has made this book successful. However, after reading the detailed section on how to lose weight, I was disappointed that there was no chapter dedicated to gaining weight. Apart from this, I find no other cause for complaint with this book.
The author's honesty stands out. When discussing controversial issues, he develops his ideas logically without being dogmatic. The text is written in simple and clear language. Unlike some other books on health, professional words which are hard to decipher were replaced with simple words. Overall, I think this book is captivating and relevant. It is simply impossible to cover all the issues addressed in the book in this short summary.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was professionally edited. The issues discussed can be useful to those interested in improving their health. However, it will serve well for prevention purposes rather than for cures. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is a book which deserves a permanent space on one's shelf.
